Trump Administration Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for 75 Countries
The Trump administration has announced a suspension of U.S. immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, according to the State Department. The policy is set to take effect on January 21.
The suspension applies specifically to immigrant visas, which are intended for foreigners seeking permanent residence in the United States. It does not affect non-immigrant visas, including those issued for temporary workers, students, tourists, or individuals traveling under World Cup-related visa programs.
The affected countries were already subject to various immigration restrictions under previous Trump-era policies, signaling a continued effort to tighten U.S. immigration controls.
In its justification, the State Department stated that immigrants from the listed countries “take welfare from the American people at unacceptable rates.” However, existing federal regulations significantly limit access to public benefits for most immigrants. For instance, many green card holders must wait five years before becoming eligible for programs such as food assistance, non-emergency Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
The announcement has drawn attention amid ongoing debates over immigration policy, public spending, and labor needs in the United States, particularly as the country prepares to host major international events
